Playbook: Mike's 5-Point Strategy to Defeat Bill Bolling

1.  Lead on the #1 Issue Facing Virginia Voters:  Jobs

Unemployment is skyrocketing in Virginia.  Mike Signer was the last candidate to enter the race for Lieutenant Governor, but still is the only one to develop a practical jobs plan that would create 50,000 new jobs by the end of 2011 in seven critical areas, including low-tech and high-tech infrastructure, the creation of a “smart grid,” rural tourism, wind power offshore in Hampton Roads, and efficiency and weatherization.

2.  Stay on the Offense and Know How to Win

Mike Signer served as senior strategist to Tom Perriello in his upset win against incumbent Republican Congressman Virgil Goode, designing a plan that ran hard on kitchen table issues—the economy, health care, education, and national security—in a district that was 2/3 “red,” staying on the offense against an incumbent with a poor record on delivering for voters.  He will do the same thing this fall against Bill Bolling.

3.  Extend the Warner/Kaine Legacy

Mike Signer worked on both of Mark Warner’s campaigns and was appointed by Governor Warner as Deputy Counselor—one of a handful of senior aides.  Mike worked closely with Governor Warner on critical executive decisions, even matters of life and death such as clemency appeals.  Later, Tim Kaine asked Mike to represent him as a surrogate on his gubernatorial campaign at events around central Virginia.

4.  Be Strong on National Security

Mike is an accomplished national security consultant.  He served as Senator John Edwards’ foreign policy adviser on his 2008 presidential campaign. Recently, he founded and directed the Homeland Security Presidential Transition Initiative at the Center for American Progress.  Mike is National Security Policy Fellow at the think tank Third Way and is a Principal of the Truman National Security Project.  Fulfilling the sacred contract with veterans and military families is a centerpiece of Mike’s campaign.

5.  Build on Barack Obama's Victory in Virginia

Mike served as an advisor to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in several capacities, including serving on the Veterans Policy Development Board.  He played a senior role in the Obama campaign’s election protection program in Virginia, training hundreds of volunteers and serving in the Election Day “boiler room.”   He will bring this experience in a winning Virginia campaign to his general election campaign.
